L. Mencken announced that Puritans and their American legatees were animated by a <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theatlantic.com\/politics\/archive\/2015\/07\/puritans-american-society\/398138\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">\u201chaunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy,\u201d<\/a><\/strong> most Americans have been happy enough to blame Puritans for cancel culture, hypocrisy, mistrust, and even for indecency and violence. Some Americans even commercialize Puritanism\u2019s lurid excesses, as if doing so might help us to feel better about ourselves. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But what if Puritans knew a lot about our divided hearts, and were frank about it, in ways that today&#8217;s moralists, Freudians, and post-Freudians don&#8217;t quite acknowledge? What if their theologically fixed prejudices about Jews&#8217; destiny included reverence for Jews&#8217; Hebrew ancestors and their descendants? Growing up as I did in a crossroads between those two traditions,<strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2024\/03\/31\/israel-and-the-puritans-a-historical-romance\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.salon.com\/2024\/03\/31\/israel-and-the-puritans-a-historical-romance\/\">I&#8217;ve made some informed observations <\/a><\/strong>about Israel&#8217;s and American Calvinists&#8217; continuing co-dependency today. A review of David Gelernter&#8217;s <em>Americanism: The Fourth Great Western Religion<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Partly because of this troubling development, <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/washingtonmonthly.com\/2018\/06\/22\/it-can-happen-here\/\">It Can Happen Here. <\/a><\/strong> In 2018, a moment in Berlin stirred my darkest intuitions about Trump, which I expressed in <em>The Washington  Monthly,<\/em> June 22, 2018.
